They Also Serve Who Only Stand And Wait – A Riddle

From outside we keep folks together,
and on the inside, from each other.
We stand silent all day and night,
clad in colors and in plain sight.

Autumn or Winter, Spring or Summer,
or heavy downpour, not a bother.
But never seen or hats tipped,
no nods given or ever thanked.

All by oneself, may be a forlorn member,
but we build our strength with many a number.
Chipped or scraped, banged or bruised,
and even nailed, we remain unruffled.

If pushed to the wall, we shake off and
when we do,
there would be a lot to clean up after us
for poor you.

To clue you in on us,
you are sure to be left standing in a stun
when we are said to come down in a ton.
And, if ever a critic speaks his mind outright,
you are said to be served a volley of our bat.

End

The answer is in the comment.
